GUERRILLA MARKETING
GUERRILLA
MARKETING
If a business is using
only traditional marketing then they are missing out on an incredible valuable
opportunity to get more attention and generate more leads, customers and sales.
By this article you will be knowing what exactly Guerrilla marketing is and how
it works?
Guerrilla Marketing isn’t
new! Yet it still, after all these years one of the misunderstood and underused
marketing strategies available to today’s modern marketer. It was offered up as
an alternative to more traditional or conventional kind of marketing.
What exactly Guerrilla
marketing is! And what does it mean to a business?
Guerrilla marketing
started a way back in 1984 when American business writer Jay Conrad published a
book of the same. He described in his book that this kind of marketing strategy
focus on taking the customer/viewer with surprise by creating a strong and
eventually creating a massive buzz through a word-of-mouth. Now after 3 decades
guerrilla marketing has been used to sell almost everything from soaps to
movies to pizzas.
It is type of marketing
that does not look or feel or even seem like marketing at all. It could be
interesting packaging that makes you to do a double-take, really kind of
appreciate and sort of getting confused or excited or at least interested in
what’s even going on. It can also be in any kind of media style like text,
image, video or anything.
Few examples of Guerrilla
marketing!
McDonald
McDonald's implemented
guerrilla marketing numerous times across the globe and became a great example
of a market leader in the fast food. McDonald's has wisely
used the advantage of simple and common elements on the streets to showcase
their french fries, coffee and chicken nuggets with dipping sauces.
GoldToe
GoldToe in 2010, to
celebrate the launch of its newest shirts and underwear in 2010, dressed up famous
Statues in New York City with their t-shirts and underwear. This event took
place during New York Fashion Week, but that did not grab the attention with
this. But as a surprise, the most eye catching and engagement of audience came
when the famous Wall Street Bull was wrapped in a hilariously oversized pair of
tighty whities.
KitKat
KitKat launched a park
bench as a part of their ad campaign where they painted those park benches like
unwrapped KitKat. This was a really creative and easy use of guerrilla
marketing. The brand awareness for KitKat has been increased and the repainting
park benches similar to candy bar was done with low cost. I’m sure after I was
sitting on that park bench, I would grab a bar.
Mr. Clean
One of the stripes of the
crosswalk is painted bright white, while the others are covered by mud, The Mr.
Clean logo was placed at the bottom of that stripe is a unique way to highlight
their product. Seeing the Mr. Clean difference is a big part of their overall
advertising, and this picture clearly implies that to anyone who walks over it
will notice and remember the brand as well as product.
IBM
IBM is committed itself
in creating solutions that help cities all over the world get smarter, in order
to make life in those cities better. That’s why IBM and Ogilvy worked together
to spark positive change with the “People for Smarter Cities” project, and
unite city leaders and forward-thinking citizens. To spread this thinking,
Ogilvy the advertising agency created outdoor advertising with a purpose, they
recreated a bench, a shelter and a ramp that are not only designed to be
beautiful, but to be useful to city citizens as well.
‘IT’ Movie
In 2017, Village Roadshow
deployed a weird drive to promote the horror flick, IT was deployed by agency
called Village Roadshow. This promotion is one of the brain child of Mr.
Glasses. It was to tie red balloons to storm water drains.
Alongside the drains there was the message written, ‘IT IS CLOSER THAN YOU
THINK. #ITMOVIE IN CINEMAS SEPTEMBER 7’. This marketing strategy by the agency
went viral globally. The red balloon has played a prominent role not only in
the movie, IT but also in its marketing as mentioned above.
Copenhagen Zoo
The
Copenhagen Zoo has covered a local bus in a custom design (snake on bus), which
catches eyes all over the city. The campaign
was successful and attracted more people to go to the Copenhagen Zoo. This helped the zoo for becoming one
of the most visited locations in the country in 2010.
These are few examples
which create a memorable image in customers/viewers mind with the help of
Guerrilla marketing. There are hundreds of examples or ideas which are
implemented by companies using Guerrilla marketing. When a company wants to
market its brand with low cost and high penetration, it is one of the best
marketing strategies which can be implemented. Hope you all enjoyed the
article. Thank you
